Mezzanine Gallery

Odette Graskie presents The Sorrows, an interactive exhibition of drawings and installation based artwork.

Sorrow (n.)
(1) An unspoken intensity of feeling
(2) A spark of transcendence that punctuates the flat-lining banality of everyday life
(3) A healthy ache that reminds you your body exists.

These bodies are a dance of humanity, and each form contains its own possible story as it mingles with the others. They explore man’s existence in relation to forms that could be human too. The Sorrows are sometimes tragic and other times entirely silly. While one may look like he is doing a handstand, he might also be strung up by his feet. The work embodies the frail existence we all have as humans.

Anthony Lee Martin - Grafica Sul do Save
New Media Room

Filmmaker turned printmaker, Anthony Lee Martin presents the intimate story of Grafica Sul do Save, a letterpress printing shop in Inhambane, Mozambique. Martin fell instantly in love with the medium of printmaking and knew that he wanted to help tell the story of the shop and the people who run it.

Making the prints was an intricate process. We initially needed to decided on the page layout, font and design. Once these were in place we made begun making test prints in order to set every individual letter at the correct depth for the best print result. In the end each of the final 50 A4 prints were passed through the press twice.  This process took a full day and I believe we managed to create something timeless that holds much more weight than the mere paper it was printed on….

My hope is that people may feel the same encouragement, strengthening and comfort as they interact with the film, and the prints. And who knows maybe a couple of people will want one of the prints we made to be with them in their homes.

Patrick Bongoy - Remains

Patrick Bongoy, born in DRC but living and working in Cape Town, explores the medium of recycled rubber, transforming it into intricate installations and sculptural works.  In this latest body of work, he continues to explore the overarching themes of migration and alienation through the loss of one's homeland, as well as and the resulting effects on both identity and culture.

“In particular in this exhibition, I am zoning in on the specific aspects of  dehumanisation that takes place when people, and entire communities, are plagued by toxic historical narratives,  socio-political violations and rapidly degrading physical environments.”

- Patrick Bongoy, 2019

'Remains’,  Bongoy's second solo exhibition in South Africa, opens this Thursday, 6 pm, at the AVA Gallery. The project is a collaboration with EBONY/CURATED.
