Josephine Grindrod - Gesturing Objects: Ghastly Tenderness and the Doubly Present

Main and Mezzanine Galleries

"My work is informed by the idea of the 'infra-thin' – how close is the relation between one thing and another. Notions of the double, the sur-real, and slippages in meaning are set against painting’s relation to mechanical modes of reproduction and repetition.

Through my broad exploration of ritualized play –whether as carnival, festival or a child’s imaginal world - I seek to evoke a certain atmosphere where the intertwining of the tender and the ghastly, the live and the deathly, are simultaneously evoked."
