Patrick Bongoy, born in DRC but living and working in Cape Town, explores the medium of recycled rubber, transforming it into intricate installations and sculptural works. In this latest body of work, he continues to explore the overarching themes of migration and alienation through the loss of one's homeland, as well as and the resulting effects on both identity and culture.
“In particular in this exhibition, I am zoning in on the specific aspects of dehumanisation that takes place when people, and entire communities, are plagued by toxic historical narratives, socio-political violations and rapidly degrading physical environments.”
- Patrick Bongoy, 2019
'Remains’, Bongoy's second solo exhibition in South Africa, opens this Thursday, 6 pm, at the AVA Gallery. The project is a collaboration with EBONY/CURATED.
