Why do you make art?

Because as Gerhard Richter said, ‘I am allowed.’

Are there any specific artists or movements that influence your work?

I have always been moved by the work of German painters Casper David Friedrich and Anselm Kiefer. I look at Louise Bourgeois and Peter Doig for guidance in how to approach my art practice, I learn from their methods. As for movements I am influenced by Rock Art, Landart and Landscape Painting.

What is the best life lesson being an artist has taught you?

To trust my intuition.

What is the most challenging thing about being an artist?

Being so very exposed.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your work?

At the opening someone came to me and said, ‘I did not know that I was thirsty for art, but now I am full.’ (I did not see that coming.)

Gedagtes van Stof by Klara-Marié den Heijer will be on exhibition in the Main Gallery until 19.11.20.
