Once or twice each year the AVA’s Salon a.k.a. Voorkamer morphs into an artist’s studio. Since 2017 artists from Limpopo, Sudan/Kenia, Kalahari, Switzerland and Luanda have been in residence in this street-facing space, creating new work that develops into a Studio exhibition after two or three months. Since mid-November Ricardo Kapuka, from Catumbela, Benguela, Angola, has been meticulously cutting stencils, which in the next few weeks he will render in acrylic spray paint to canvas, wood, and traditional African fabric. Kapuka takes stencil art, as well as animation, to yet another level.
Kapuka, a self-taught artist skilled in freehand drawing, animation, graphic design, painting, and other mixed media, had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Angola and Portugal (where he lived from 1994 - 2009), as well as in Paris (AKAA 2019).
The residency project is a collaboration with ELA - Espace Luanda Arte, and World Art.
Kapuka’s Studio exhibition opens on 4 January 2020 at 11am.
