Anthony Cawood's 4th solo exhibition at AVA titled "Reflections" includes works from two different series, made a year apart, in diffrent studios. Although separated in time, the series are linked by the season, made just as winter turned to spring.
I like to think that the changing seasons links the series. I started afresh in both studios, making new works and allowing the experiences during that time to lead and influence the work's development. Some of the paths I took on those journeys led to new places, some familiar places, and some uncomfortable places. But through the rigorous work routine and trust in the creative process, I managed to draw breath and reflect on this given opportunity to make works. This brief time, while the works are exhibited, I pass on to the viewer. With the hope that in some way they, too, can pause and look and find shared experience. - Anthony Cawood
Artist Biography
Anthony Cawood is a practicing artist and art facilitator living and working in Cape Town. Cawood's focus has always been on studio practice. Time working and exploring the craft of painting and image-making has occupied him for over 20 years. He has occupied studios in ACME studios in London, UK, Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, Bag Factory JHB, and resident artist at Gallery South, Muizenberg, Ruth Prowse Art School, and Association for Visual Arts. Cawood's current work is an exploration of traditional painting techniques, including using and sourcing natural painting mediums.
As an art facilitator, Cawood has held demonstrations and workshops on techniques and different uses of paint mediums. From natural mediums like egg tempera to complex uses of wax in oil painting, and also modern acrylic paints, with all its flexibility. For over a decade he has been an arts facilitator in an Occupational Therapy Department, working with forensic patients. He has facilitated numerous patients exhibitions as such.
As a practicing artist, Cawood has held solo exhibitions at the Association for Visual Arts, Gallery South. He has participated in group shows at Greatmore studios, Irma Stern Museum, Eclectica gallery and Cape Town Art Fair. Cawood has also been an active participant and contributor to Thupelo international workshops, held on Robben Island, and in Prince Albert, Malmesbury and Durban.
