BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE:
18.08.22 - 19.09.22
Clare Menck, Jo Roets, Kristen McClarty, Laurel Holmes and Madeleine van Manen
Every year, for the month of August, South Africa celebrates women. Beyond the specific day on the 9th that serves as the climax of the events, August is a month with women at its center. Within that narrative, the AVA is proud to present an exhibition with five extraordinary artists.
Clare Menck made the Top 40 Sanlam Portrait Awards twice (2013 and 2015). One of Clare’s works is incorporated in the Iziko National Gallery Collection. Jo Roets is a passionate sculptor, painter and mould maker, and recipient of the 2018 StateoftheART Gallery Award. Art practises are woven into Jo’s education and professional career. Kristen McClarty’s work draws inspiration from her surroundings; a story of a person in a space, surrounded by built-up memory of self and others. Laurel Holmes mainly works in painting (oil on canvas), wax encaustic and mixed media, with printmaking in the mix through two internships at Warren Editions. Madeleine van Manen paints in various mediums, ranging from oils to gouache and pastel, mixed medium and printmaking.
