AVA-curated project at Leeuwenhof

The Slave Quarters at Leeuwenhof estate, the Premier of the Western Cape’s residence, is being developed as a site of reflection and remembrance concerning the lives of enslaved people, their contribution to the Cape and the ongoing legacy and impact on our contemporary society.

Seeking professional artists who share in the heritage of slavery and slave trade routes, for a group exhibition that provides a space where social, cultural and economic legacies of slavery can be voiced.

AVA interprets ‘visual art’ in its widest definition, i.e. from painting through to ceramics, photography, sound, video, fashion, installation and performance – by established and emerging artists.

The artwork itself need not necessarily engage with the history of slavery directly, but the artist must be able to describe their connection to this part of history in Africa and the diaspora.

This open call is now closed.

Exhibition opening: 19 February 2022

N.B. the exhibition will be launched during Investec Cape Town Art Fair and art work will be for sale.

A Ripple Effect: dialogues with water

EITZ - a Cape Town artists’ collective focused on climate change - is working towards an October 2022 exhibition at the AVA; A Ripple Effect: Dialogues with Water. The exhibition aims to position the AVA as a living laboratory where more than-human perspectives and multi-storied imaginings might arise.

Water will be invited to appear as Magician, Guide, Healer, Traveller, Activist, Sustainer, Arbiter and Author.

As part of our research, we’re hosting a series of morning Life Writing workshops in March 2022 in our Church Street project space Zero. We’re offering four places, in these workshops, to emerging artists interested in exploring how ‘writing water stories’ might open up their visual practise.

We’re also keen to work with other artists and citizen-scientists focused on water and interested in collaboration. Contact: eitzart@gmail.com
